Autumn in New York
For my birthday this year I got to spend time in one of our favorite cities in the USA. New York City. I’m an October baby so unfortunately for everyone around me I love Autumn to a sickening extent and make it my whole personality. It wasn’t peak Fall while we were there, the leaves where still green but the air was chilly and the breeze never stopped blowing. You could see a couple trees here and there turning orange and it felt like everything was going to be alright in the world.
We sat in central park for a few hours one day. We ate bagels and drank crappy coffee. Saw visitors rowing their little boats on The Lake. We said hi to some bird watchers and sat for a while on a wooden bench listening to an old man play the saxophone on a bridge. We were only in NYC for a long weekend and I was sick with a cold the entire time but something about that city man… we absolutely love it.
My favorite fashion styles is when I can layer clothing. Fall fashion essentially. Getting to dress up like that in Manhattan and not even worry if I have sweat stains is ethereal.
I tend to zone out a lot. I don’t do it on purpose, I just catch myself in la la land too often. On this trip I was trying really hard to catch myself and just observe everything around me.
We walked almost everywhere. I hardly stepped foot on the subway, and I feel like we actually got a taste of life in the big apple. I saw children being walked home by their parents from school. All the kids had cowboy hats for some reason. I saw groups of old men just chatting with each other on the sidewalk outside of their homes. I saw delivery drivers on the tiniest Amazon trucks you can imagine.
We shopped in neighborhoods I’ve never explored before. Looked through shops of vintage clothes, books, and video games.
Walking those filthy streets with the cool crisp air blowing in the trees made me so happy!
I only took my film camera with me this trip in the hopes I didn’t spend my time looking through a digital camera lens the whole time and it was so freeing. I did finish a roll of film right at the beginning of the day and forgot to bring extras so we had to find a camera shop in a random street, up 3 floors, and hidden in the back of the building so I could buy a couple rolls of film. It was amazing!
Even the little “inconveniences” turned into their own adventures and unlocked even more of what the city has to offer.
On the last day in NYC we sat at Bryant Park surrounded by a bunch of other people and just sat and chit chatted along with everyone else. It was already dark out and they were about to close the park. But it hit us that NYC really has something for everyone and for every season. You feel like you can do anything but also you feel so small. Your problems can feel small.
I hate to sound cliche but just sitting and observing everything around you..being present, you can really start to believe the saying “If you can make it there [NYC], you can make it anywhere”.
I’m not so sure I could live there myself, but visiting every so often will be a must. This was our 5(?) time going.
We did a lot more this trip than I expected. Went to NYCC and took a day trip to Sleepy Hollow but right this moment I am feeling very nostalgic for the overall vibe we experienced this trip and how autumnal that get-a-way felt for me.
Also, ramen in NYC?! Amazing.
Anyways.. I have nothing else to add so.. till next time!
